People Already Camped Out for Black Friday

CBS Local covers the true die-hards who are already camped out in preparation for Friday:

"PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Black Friday is still slightly less than a week away, but some locals are already camping out for deals.

One group of about a half-dozen people – and a dog — is already camped out at the Best Buy in Pleasant Hills.

“It’s exciting,” said Jesse Bredholt from West Mifflin"

5 Benefits of the LATCH System for Car Seats

Developers have been working to improve the child safety seat beyond what it is currently capable of. Check out this article form Howstuffworks.com to take a look at how the current LATCH system does and does not work: bit.ly/UvrxDe

"The problem, researchers determined, is that there was no consistency across the industry. Car seats were a confusing mass of plastic and metal and fabric that perched awkwardly and unsteadily on a car's backseat, and it was up to the most responsible adult available to decide how to thread the car's seatbeltsthrough the seat base's loops and come up with something that looked like it might be a tight enough fit. This was, one can imagine, done quickly, under pressure, with a squalling infant balanced on the hip, all the while grabbing fistfuls of hair. Most of the time, it was okay, since people don't crash every time they leave the driveway. But when a crash did happen, this installation simply wasn't adequate and the kid would get hurt.

And so, the LATCH system was introduced. It stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren, and believe it or not, the acronym isn't the most awkward part of the initiative. Rather, that would be the result of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiative to force automakers and infant safety seat manufacturers to meet a series of standards that would simplify the entire process of getting a kid strapped safely into a car. LATCH was rolled out gradually, with orders to be fully implemented by September of 2002. Years later, there are still a lot of questions -- and some of its purported benefits are still being called into question."

Why Does My Car Pull to the Right?

Check out this article from InternetAutoGuide.com to find out why the alignment on a car can go wrong, and what to do when it does: bit.ly/UrrHBs

"Taking Sides

Tire separation can make a car steer itself, and this condition often escapes notice. The separation occurs between the tire belts, and sometimes no obvious defect is visible. You can check for this by switching the front tires and going for a test drive. Replace the tire if the pulling sensation changes sides with the tire. Do not continue to use a separated tire anywhere on the car, as its structural integrity has been compromised.

Braking Bad

A brake that fails to release completely can cause a car to pull to the side that has the excessive drag. The brake caliper piston can fail to retract completely if the piston or bore are corroded. The rubber brake hose that serves the right front wheel may suffer from internal decomposition. Loose rubber inside the hose can act like a check-valve, holding hydraulic pressure on the caliper piston after the brake pedal has been released. Experienced mechanics will often spin a car's wheels by hand, to verify proper, and similar, function.

Continental Drift

Most paved public roads are higher in the center, to aid drainage. This crowning may be more exaggerated in areas prone to routine road flooding. Whether you drive a Lincoln or a Lotus, road crown may cause your car to drift toward the right. Special alignment adjustments may be prescribed by the manufacturer to ease your car's tendency to drift away from the road crown. You might ask if some degree of "road crown compensation" can be added into your alignment adjustments if extensive travel on such roads is anticipated."

How Spark Plugs Work

Your car couldn't run without them. Check out this article from Howstuffworks.com to see how sparkplugs put the ignition in your car: bit.ly/RABZZv

"Basically, this is what happens: The spark plug sits at the top of the cylinder head. The piston first travels down the cylinder, drawing in a mixture of fuel and air. The piston then goes back up toward the spark plug, compressing the mixture. At the very last second, when the piston is at its fullest reach or top dead center (TDC), the spark plug sparks and ignites the mixture. The piston is forced back down to create power for the vehicle, then pushed back up again to clear out the exhaust. At that point, the process starts all over again.

A four-cylinder car will have four spark plugs; a six-cylinder car will have six and so on (though a HEMI engine has two plugs per cylinder). Now that we've got the basics down, let's talk about the kinds of spark plugs on the shelves at your local parts shop."

How a Car Crusher Works

Ever wonder what's the next stage of life for a car after they're junkers? HowStuffWorks.com gives you the skinny on the machines that turn cars into cubes. Head over to their site to check it out: bit.ly/RVwXaC

"For every beginning there's an end. Every shiny new car on the showroom floor will one day end up in a junkyard, its value no greater than the weight of the metal used to build it. North American auto plants built 15.8 million cars in 2005 -- all of which have to end up somewhere [Source: Business Week]. One of the most important stops an old car reaches at the end of the line is the crusher -- a massive machine whose only purpose is to compress a car into a tiny cube or flattened slab."

  • We are hiring! We're seeking automotive technicians for positions across our dealership group and would like to talk to you whether you have years of experience, or are an apprentice. Email aharding@ronlewisautomotive.com if you are interested.
  • Who doesn't want a great deal? This month Chrysler is extending "Ram Power Days" and its "Jeep Celebration Event."  This means great incentives on the 2012 Jeep Liberty and 2012 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 Hemi (say that 10 times fast).  With 3x the inventory, we have the best selection of Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram vehicles in Western Pennsylvania!
  • Don't miss our new Service and Parts coupons now posted that are redeemable at each one of our locations in Pleasant Hills, Cranberry, Waynesburg and Beaver Falls. Click here for more details.  Now's the time to think about "winterizing" your vehicle before the really cold weather hits.
  • What's your favorite car or truck color? I vote for my "Dozer" colored Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.   Annual rankings">Annual rankings on the most popular vehicle colors were just released by PPG Industries, Inc, the automotive paint supplier to General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and others. White is the reigning most popular vehicle color, with Silver ranking second.  So maybe "Dozer" isn't in the top 10 list, but I'm liking how the color "pops!"
  • This month we'll be finishing the Jeep Grand Cherokee "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" vacation package giveaway on our  Facebook">Facebook page. Take a look at the vacation packages being offered and enter to win!
  • Speaking of Facebook, we're celebrating now that we've crossed the 500 fan mark and our $500 Apple Gift Cardwinner has been announced! Checking Your Engine Oil

One of the most important things you can do to keep your car running like new is to regularly check the oil, but do you know how?

Check engine oil regularly, especially if you notice that the oil level drops between the oil changes. Engine oil cools down and lubricates the engine. Driving with very low oil level can cause engine problems.

Park your vehicle on a level ground. Set the parking brake. Make sure the transmission is in "Park". Stop the engine. Wait for a minute or two to let engine oil drain into the oil pan. Pull the engine oil dipstick. If you don't know where it’s located, check your owner's manual, usually it has a bright handle saying "Engine Oil".

Wipe the dipstick off. Insert it back fully. Pull it out again and check the oil level.

The oil level should be between the "Low" and "Full" marks. In this photo the level is OK and oil looks clean.

Check the oil condition: If it's way too black, as in the left photo, it's definitely time to change it. If it's brown, but still clean and transparent, as in the right photo, it's OK. If engine oil is of the "coffee with milk" color it means that engine coolant mixes with oil. This is a sign of some internal engine problem, such as, for example, a leakinghead gasket - have your car checked out.
If oil looks clean, but the level is low, you can just top it up.

To top off engine oil use a recommended type of oil; for example, if your owner's manual or the oil filler cap indicates SAE 5W-20, use SAE 5W-20 oil. If your engine needs synthetic oil, use only synthetic oil. You can find the recommended oil type for your car in your owner's manual.

How to top off engine oil:
Add a little amount of oil into the oil filler neck. Wait for a minute to let oil to flow into the oil pan. Check the oil level again with the dipstick. If it's still low, add some more. But don't overfill it. Don't forget to install the dipstick back and close the oil filler cap when you finished.

Ram Long Hauler Concept

It's not often you hear about concept cars or trucks just being built and driven for the heck of it... but that's the story of the Ram Long Hauler Concept truck. It basically is a mashup of everything they like about all of their trucks... even comes with a 170+ gallon fuel capacity.

After you read this article from Motortrend, tell us what you think. Is this truck to big, is it just right, what else does it need?

Last year, Ram Truck built a concept truck to showcase the best the company currently offers and tease some ideas that might be coming in the next few years and dubbed it the Ram Long-Hauler. Based on a Ram 5500 frame and iffted with a custom Mega Cab and fifth-wheel specific rear tailgate, the Long-Hauler boasts premium interior bits, performance upgrades behind the Cummins, and the ability to carry 170 gallons of diesel spread among three separate fuel tanks. From a distance, the average person doesn't realize it's anything more than a big dualie. On closer inspection, however, you can't help but notice the 24-foot overall length and the separate box sandwiched between the bed and the cab.

Our story begins in Roswell at the International UFO Museum, Research Center, and Gift Emporium. The Museum houses the compendium of human knowledge relating to the incident that happened during a thunderstorm one night in July 1947. Newspaper clippings, documents, photographs, and artistic renderings line the walls of this theater turned intergalactic shrine.

Cut Your Risk Of An Accident:

Safety is always a concern while driving, especially if you're a "family-hauler". Fortunately Women-Drivers has some tips that can help you avoid a collision, and keep you on the road:

There are an estimated 250 million vehicles on U.S. roads today. This is a recipe for more traffic jams and longer commutes which can lead to shorter tempers. Read the following tips and live by them – they will make a difference to your well-being while in the car, as well as others who are on the road with you.

-Be cognizant: When driving, remain aware of others around you. Do not get sucked into a situation that can lead to unsafe behavior or triggering an emotional dispute with another driver.

-Be generous: When in traffic and someone wants to cut in front of you, let them. You getting to your exit, through the tunnel or to the toll gate one car length behind, will not greatly impact your arrival time at all. It will, however, insure your getting there safely.

Did You Know?
Listening to soft or quiet music, intentional breathing, hands-free driving and leaving on time all make a difference in reducing stress while driving in heavy traffic which allows you to maintain good judgement while on the road.

-Be spacious: Do not tailgate. Leave plenty or room between you and the car ahead of you – even if the driver behind you is tailgating.

-Be consistent: When driving in a highly trafficked area, attempt to maintain the car at a steady speed. Do not drive at inconsistent speeds to pass someone unsafely or to ‘get away’ from another vehicle.

-Be present: Phone calls, incoming texts, makeup or children can all be a distraction to you. All of these can impact your driving. Stay present to your driving responsibility as well as the driving responses of others.

-Be schooled: For many adult drivers, the last time they took a drivers education class was when they got their driver’s license. How many years ago was that? Through local continuing adult refresher classes, enroll yourself in a program to see what is new as well as get a refresher on some things you may have forgotten.

Chrysler 300 Proves Better Than Rivals

Chrysler has come a long way in the last couple of years and the fresh luxurious style of the 300 is no exception to that and in the most recent consumer reports proves to be better than its rivals.

InAutoNews writes:

In CR’s rankings, the 300 scored 83, behind only Hyundai’s Genesis (92). The New York-based magazine and product-testing group tested the cars for their handling, efficiency, comfort and ease of use. The 300′s good rating follows improved results in Consumer Reports testing for Chrysler models including the 200 sedan, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango sport-utility vehicles.

“The 2011 redesign of the 300 put Chrysler’s flagship back on the map in the large-sedan category,” David Champion, senior director of the Consumer Reports Automotive Test Center, said in a statement. Consumer Reports tested the latest 300 version, with six-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, which improved the model’s rating in fuel-economy tests. The 300 achieved 22 miles (35 kilometers) per gallon, according to the statement.

Jeep/Mopar 13 On The Way?

Jeep and Mopar enthusiasts, if you've loved the previous Mopar versions you're going to love this news: The Mopar 13 may be a rugged Jeep model.

TorqueNews rumored this:

Chrysler’s Mopar division is best known for their supply of OEM replacement parts and high performance components ranging from cold air intakes to crate engines but beginning in 2012, the Mopar division began offering their own limited edition, customized versions of company products. At first there was the Mopar 10 based on the Dodge Challenger followed by the Charger based Mopar 11 and the Chrysler 300C based Mopar 12. After the Challenger was featured in 2010, many expected that the Charger would be the Mopar 11 – and it was.

Keeping Up On Brake Pads

Are you the "Get your hands dirty and do it yourself" kind of person? Well, if you are and you are into your own vehicle maintenance don't forget to check your brakes. Weak brakes can lead to collisions so we want to show you how to check them to keep them in top notch shape!

HSW has a fantastic step by step tutorial:

Fix my brakes for me, I need help!

Washing your car can be a pain in the rear. Especially when you get to the wheels. But once done, there's something gratifying about driving around in your gleaming ride. Then it never fails. The next day you look at your front wheels and notice they're all dirty again. What's going on?

What you're seeing is all the brake dust from your front brake pads. The fine powder is created from the rotor wearing away the brake lining. When you step on the brake pedal, it's this wearing process on the brake material that creates the necessary friction to stop the vehicle.

Brakes are designed to wear out. But sometimes we may go too long between brake jobs and run into additional costs we could have avoided had we checked the brake pads regularly. If the pads wear too far, the metal backing on the brake pad comes in contact with the brake rotor. Once you make metal to metal contact, you've not only damaged the rotor, but put yourself in a dangerous situation. And, you've added a good bit of money to the costs you're facing for new brakes.

This article will give you the insight you need to inspect your brake pads so you can avoid a major brake problem both mechanically and financially. Let's start with how to determine brake wear.

Preventing Car Rust

Rust... in a car it's the root of all evil! It's not just something that affects the metal on the outside of your car keeping it pretty and preventing it from being an eye-sore, but it can affect the workings of your car...

For cars, rust is a disease, and it can spread like one too... once oxidation happens and a small hole opens it can spread like wildfire.

Howstuffworks has a fancy guide to preventing rust to keep your car in top shape:

Keeping your car in good working order requires regular maintenance and careful observation. One problem any motorist wants to avoid is rust. Rust not only makes your car less attractive, it can cause serious damage if left unchecked.

Rust is iron oxide, a molecule consisting of two iron atoms and three oxygen atoms. It's the product of an electrochemical process called corrosion. To create rust, three factors must be present: an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte. An anode is a piece of metal that will readily release electrons under the right circumstances. Cathodes are metals that will accept electrons. Electrolytes are liquids that facilitate the movement of electrons.

Keep reading to learn how to prevent rust: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/under-the-hood/vehicle-maintenance/prevent-automotive-rust.htm .

Keeping Your Car Clean

One of the best ways to protect your car and its paint is to clean it regularly. Dust build up is rusts best friend, and when you mix constant dirt, water, and heat the results can be bad.

It's not just the outside that deserves a good cleaning, but the inside too. Let's face it, we're all a bit lazy and that's probably why some of our cars look the way they do.

So to keep your car looking new we have some awesome tips from Jalopnik and don't worry... these work well even for the lazy.

3.) Every time you leave, take something out

Suggested By: mcdbrendan, Right Foot to Boxer, BrtStlnd

Why it's effective: There are three cleaning regimens that will keep your car clean. Each one requires a different degree of diligence, but they all work.

Every time you stop for gas, reach into all the cubby holes and pull out the trash so you can throw it out.

Every time you stop and get out of your car for any reason, grab all the trash in your car.

If you stop and your car already looks clean, look around for one thing in your car that doesn't strictly need to be there and take it out.

2.) Make a routine for washing

Suggested By: TimTim, Jstas

Why it's effective: There's no quick fix to keeping your car washed regularly. You have to either set up a schedule for taking your car to a carwash, or you need to start a routine for washing your own car.

Mark it out on your calendar and use the two-bucket method. One bucket has clean water and the other bucket is soapy. Scrub your car clean, soap it up, then wash it all off from the top down. Stay regimented and your car won't ever stay dirty.

Video Credit: Ben Bunch

1.) Keep it clean so it stays clean

Suggested By: horspowr1001

Why it's effective: The easiest way to keep your car from getting dirty is to clean it once and make sure it stays that way. Once it's clean, it's easy to keep it clean, as reader horspowr1001 explains:

Car Cleaning Tips

Are you as lazy as some of the rest of us? Do you not feel like hand washing your car all the time? There are steps you can take to keep it clean a little at a time.

10.) Don't eat in there

Why it's effective: If you can avoid eating in your car, you won't have to deal with all the wrappers, cartons, stains and crumbs that inevitably follow.

9.) Wax it occasionally

Why it's effective: It means you have to buy something and it means you have to spend some time after washing your car, but it's an investment that pays off. Waxing your car occasionally makes washing it the next time easier.

8.) Knock your shoes before getting in

Why it's effective: Wherever it snows and gets slushy, you really can't keep your car from getting dirty on the inside, but you can do a lot just by knocking your boots before you get in.

Sit down on the seat with your legs outside and knock your cold, block-like feet together. Then you just swivel in. It means your footwells won't be quite so grimy and icy.

Pittsburgh Blues Festival

The Pittsburgh Blues Festival kicks off tonight featuring Terrance Simien & the Zydeco Experience.

The Pittsburgh Blues Festival, presented by Peoples Natural Gas, takes place July 20-22, 2012 at Hartwood Acres. This is the 18th year for this fundraiser, which benefits Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The line-up of blues musicians includes a variety of blues styles, from zydeco to boogie.  The weekend begins with a Mardi Gras party. Admission to Friday (only) is FREE with the donation of a
bag of nonperishable groceries for the Food Bank, thanks to sponsors Giant Eagle, Fox 53, and WDVE 102.5 fm. Terrance Simien is billed as a fierce guardian of true Zydeco blues temming from his 8th generation Creole heritage.  Anthony Gomes will warm up the evening – a past winner of the Blueswax “Blues Guitarist of the Year” award. In past years the Food Bank has collected as much as 12 tons of food on free Friday.

The rest of the line-up is pretty classic – Canned Heat, Mavis Staples, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Bernard Allison Group, Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers, Albert Cummings and Barbara Blue. Canned Heat stormed onto the music stage as the headliner at Woodstock and became known as “kings of the boogie.” Mavis Staples, of the famous gospel family singers, is one of blues’ remaining first ladies; she won a Grammy in 2010 for her latest release You Are Not Alone. Bobby “Blue” Bland started out with B.B. King, and is the inspiration of record for dozens of today’s best blues musicians...

We Now Have The Dodge Dart!

Pleasant Hills Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram now has the all new Dodge Dart, and the Dart has certainly been a welcoming new attraction. It's sleek style, the technology inside, and 41mpg are enough to make anyone's head turn. Now Dodge is ramping up advertising with the latest commercial for the Dart aired during the MLB All-Star Game.

DigitalTrends writes:

The Dodge Dart media campaign won’t kick into high gear until September, but that hasn’t stopped Chrysler from giving us a glimpse at this hotly anticipated compact car.

The spot, which is titled “How to Change Cars Forever,” aired last night during the Major League Baseball All-Star Game and kicks off the Dart’s “New Rules” ad campaign.

With the Jay-Z and Kanye West single “No Church in the Wild” bumping in the background, we’re treated to a humor-filled, rapid-fire look at what goes into designing a car from the ground up: apparently lots of coffee and little sleep. There’s even a brief cameo by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for that obligatory celeb tie-in.

“Adding a dose of fun, creative license and Dodge brand humor, [the ad] captures the meticulous process of starting with a simple idea and developing it into a revolutionary new car,” says Olivier Francois, head of marketing for Chrysler Group LLC. “[With the commercial] we wanted to provide a peek inside what it takes to bring a new car to fruition.”

Chrysler to Present Hybrid Van Models

Chrysler Corp has set out to test 4 Hybrid models one of which will be the popular Town & Country model.

The WindsorStar writes:

Chrysler is investing $15.8 million into the project and the U.S. Department of Energy is contributing $10 million.

Only 25 test vehicles will be created, according to Abdullah A. Bazzi, senior manager of electrified powertrain programs for Chrysler Group.

"This Town and Country minivan is the only minivan to boast a plug-in hybrid powertrain in combination with flex fuel capability," Bazzi said. "We're pleased to have four of these 25 vehicles being tested right here in Chrysler's backyard where they can get real-world use and be evaluated promptly."

Auburn Hills will use the Chrysler-owned vehicles for testing purposes to evaluate everyday city and highway driving. Staff selected to evaluate the vehicles will regularly report all driving and charging experiences back to Chrysler.

RAM To Produce Natural Gas Pickups

Chrysler corp is expanding its horizon in the alternative fuel category offering it's first civilian Natural Gas RAM Pickup. The new RAM will reach 255 miles on Natural gas before switching over to a 112 mile 8-Gallon gasoline tank.

Wall Street Journal writes:

The interest in natural-gas vehicles comes as gasoline prices are on the rise again and support for using domestic natural gas to replace oil is gaining support. After years of promoting electric cars, President Obama signaled a change in the administration when he said during his January State of the Union speech the nation needs to explore all alternative energy sources.

"We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years," Mr. Obama said in his speech. "My administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy. Experts believe this will support more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade."
